How to Become a Bushie

So your interested in becoming a Bushranger and you wish to join the list of many Bushies players that have represented the club - but your not sure what you need to do or how to go about it ?

The Bushrangers is a club that provides a Talent Program which was set up in 1995 to assist players who play club football take the step from club football to regional representation and then on to State Football. As part of this process – development is the focus, where the club and its coaches focus more on area’s where work is needed so players can compete at the next level – either in the State teams, State League / Senior Football and for some hopefully at AFL level.

To be considered for selection you need to live inside the region (which boundaries include – from the city down the South East Freeway along the Gateway Motorway to the Logan Motorway, then left down Mt Lindsay Highway to Beaudesert. There the boundary follows back out along the Beenleigh Beaudesert Rd linking with the Albert River out to Moreton Bay. The region includes the bay islands and the runs from Cleveland along the Brisbane River to the city).  As at 1 March 2010 the boundary for the Under 14 program only s slightly different, please click here for more information.

Each age group has a selection process:

Under 18 – The coaching staff will watch games throughout the year and liase with senior/ Under 18/Under 16 coaches before announcing the training squad (of approximately 60) which is usually named in October for a November kick off. The Carnival is generally played in March in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.  The under 18’s is the pinnacle team/age group of the player development program and is the most sought after squad to be part of and consequently the rewards are high with many players going on to play State State League or AFL football.

Under 16 – Simply take part in the Bushrangers Suad Selection Day Club Day.  All clubs within the region will be invited to field a team and every player that takes part will be watched / assessed and considered for selection.  Along with liaising with coaches a final training squad of about 45 will be selected after this day, usually early March each year.

Under 14, The Young Bushrangers – Each club coach will be asked to nominate 8 players (or more if justified) to attend theSuad Selection Day.  All players nominated take part in a variety of skills, drills, testing and AFL games.  From the day a squad of up to 50 trains on and play in some practice games before announcing the final 25 for the State Development Championships.

The most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter which club you play for - all players from all clubs are considered for selection, providing they live in the Bushrangers Development Region.

Moving clubs will not enhance your selection chances – only hard work, improvement and working on your skills / game sense will make you a better player – you will catch the eye of the selectors if good enough.
